There are an increasing number of applications at millimeter-wave frequency ranges and understanding the material-circuit interactions at these high frequencies is critical. There are applications for 60 GHz backhaul, applications at 77 GHz for automotive and many others. Each of these applications have their own special needs and for the designer to understand the high frequency PCB material properties will make a big difference in choosing the appropriate material for the application. This presentation will start with an overview of material properties which are critical for millimeter-wave applications, then an overview of transmission line insertion loss characteristics, followed by measured data of microstrip transmission line circuits up to 110 GHz using multiple different high frequency circuit materials. From the discussion and measured data, the proper material selection process for millimeter-wave applications will be demonstrated.
